Theatre Two: Day Two – 12:30 – 13:30
As a brand new degree subject at Queen’s University Belfast, Broadcast Production is delighted to present Jon Laurence, Digital Editor of Channel 4 News. Jon is responsible for output on its own website and on all social media platforms. Experiencing significant and recent rapid growth in its digital reach, the programme now receives around a quarter of a billion views per month on social media – much of it original material on global news stories. Jon will be talking about how this audience has grown, particularly among 16-34-year-olds, and how the unique blend of broadcast material and digital production has helped make that happen.
Queen’s University Belfast are delighted that Jon has agreed to launch our new Broadcast Production undergraduate degree at the festival this year. This new, highly vocational degree will explore factual programme making in all its forms. Television is no longer just the box in the corner of the room, radio has seen unprecedented growth and interactive and immersive storytelling online has never been more important. Designed in consultation with local broadcasters, this exciting new programme will work closely with industry partners to create graduates well suited to the needs of the creative industries locally and nationally. Jon Laurence is a shining example of someone who understands the new skill set required for success in an ever-changing and fast-paced broadcasting industry globally and we are delighted to host this event at this year’s festival.
