About

In recent years, we have seen the release of many feature-length children’s animations that draw from or are direct re-tellings of Irish mythologies for example, Secret of the Kells and Song of the Sea. Now, we are witnessing a new wave of animations that target mature-audiences and that try to tell these stories as authentically as possible, in Irish. Dearcán Media and Raw Nerve Productions, with the support of Coimisiún na Meán, the ILBF, TG4 and BBCNI, are currently producing an animated version of Táin Bó Cualigne, from the ancient Ulster cycle best known for its protagonist hero, Cúchulainn, as well as the formidable Queen Méabh. They are also soon to start the development of their second adaptation, Deirdre and the Sons of Uisneach, which is set in the same time as the Táin and is one of Ireland’s most tragic sagas. In this panel discussion, we will use the Táin as a case-study to examine the relationship between ancient Irish oral tradition and modern film-making, why it is important to re-imagine these stories today and what we can hope to see in the future. We will be joined by key members of Táin Bó Cualigne’s production team and the session will be chaired by Máire Zepf, who wrote the animated series for TG4, Lí Ban.
