Alongside Prof. Ailbhe Ní Chasaide, she is Principal Investigator on the ABAIR initiative (abair.ie), which develops cutting-edge AI speech and language technologies for Irish. The research team at ABAIR focuses on making Irish more accessible and usable in everyday life through tools like synthetic voices (TTS), automatic speech recognition (ASR), and conversational AI systems. These technologies are designed to support Irish speakers across education, accessibility, and media. At the Belfast Media Festival 2025, Neasa will showcase ABAIR-Fotheidil, a new system that can transcribe Irish-language television and media material (fotheidil.abair.ie). While not yet subtitling in real time, the project represents a major step forward in speech technology and media accessibility for Irish. Its goal is to enable high-quality multi-dialect real-time subtitling that enhances the viewer experience and promotes the visibility of Irish in broadcast contexts.
