About

The past few years has seen a new rise in Irish language drama films with original scripts as Gaeilge, such as An Cailín Ciúin and KNEECAP, gaining international recognition by awarding committees like the Oscars, the BAFTA’s and the IFTA’s. This demand for original Irish language drama is no different with TV projects: ‘Crá’, written for TG4 and BBC Gaeilge by Doireann Ní Chorragáin and Richie Conroy and produced by Ciarán Charles for Fíbín Media, has been very successful going on to be the first-ever Irish-language crime drama to air on a UK network, specifically the BBC. It has also accumulated impressive figures on the BBC’s iPlayer and has been sold to over 60 territories including France and the USA. In this panel discussion, we will look at ‘Crá’ as a case study to examine the current state of Irish language drama and what we can expect in the future. We will hear from 3 of the series’ main funders (the ILBF, TG4 and BBC NI) as well as the producer of the project, Ciarán Charles. The session will be chaired by Donegal native and freelance producer, Seán Ó Baoill.
